The Natarajar — Shiva as the Lord of the Cosmic Dance — is arguably the most philosophically
profound and visually magnificent image in all of Hindu iconography. The dancing form of Shiva
encapsulates the entire cosmological worldview of Hinduism in a single image: creation (the
damaru), preservation (the raised hand), destruction (the fire), liberation (the foot raised in
dance), and grace (the hand pointing to the raised foot as refuge). It is at once a supreme work
of devotional art and a complete theological statement.

The ring of fire (prabhamandala) that encircles the dancing Shiva is the most technically

Apasmara (the demon of ignorance) crushed beneath Shiva’s right foot is rendered in fine detail.

Shiva’s four arms — each carrying a significant attribute — are precisely proportioned and
beautifully balanced. His face, tilted in the ecstasy of the cosmic dance, conveys both divine joy
and transcendent power. The flying locks of his matted hair (jatamukuta) fan out in the dance’s
momentum.
