Thanjavur Paintings

Bring one of India’s most prestigious classical art forms into your home with AestheticSilai’s authentic Thanjavur Paintings — the jewel-like devotional paintings of Tamil Nadu’s greatest art tradition. Thanjavur (Tanjore) paintings are distinguished by their rich colours, their use of real gold leaf, and the characteristic raised gesso relief work that gives deity figures their three-dimensional jewelled quality. Each piece is entirely hand-crafted over multiple sessions using traditional materials and techniques. A Thanjavur painting is not a decoration — it is a sacred artwork and a cultural treasure. Thanjavur painting — Tanjore painting — is one of South India’s greatest contributions to the world of classical art. Originating in the royal court of Thanjavur in the 16th century and reaching its greatest creative heights under the patronage of the Maratha kings of the 18th and 19th centuries, Tanjore painting is characterised by a combination of aesthetic qualities that make it immediately recognisable and extraordinarily beautiful:

Rich, Jewel-like Colours: Thanjavur paintings use a palette of deep, saturated colours — crimson, deep blue, emerald green, rich ochre — that create a visual richness unlike any other painting tradition.

Real Gold Leaf: The most distinctive characteristic of Thanjavur painting is the use of real gold leaf applied over raised gesso relief work to create the jewellery, crown, and ornamental elements of the central deity figure. The gold leaf gives the painting a literal luminosity — it glows, it catches light, it changes with the time of day.

Raised Gesso Relief: Before the gold leaf is applied, the deity’s jewellery and ornaments are built up in three dimensions using a mixture of chalk powder and binding medium (gesso), creating a low-relief surface that gives the jewelled elements a physical presence in addition to their painted and gilded appearance.

AestheticSilai produces authentic Thanjavur paintings using traditional materials — real gold leaf, traditional pigments, and the gesso technique — on a wooden board base covered with cloth in the traditional manner. Our painters are trained in the Thanjavur tradition and produce works of genuine quality.
