Stainless steel is the defining material of contemporary public sculpture — the material of Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate in Chicago, of Richard Serra’s massive Cor-Ten steel works, of the gleaming contemporary sculptures that define the public spaces of the world’s most forward-looking cities. It is a material that communicates modernity, ambition, precision, and permanence simultaneously.
AestheticSilai’s Stainless Steel Modern Art works are fabricated using industrial grade 304 or 316 stainless steel (304 for indoor and sheltered outdoor applications, 316 for fully exposed outdoor environments), cut, formed, welded, and finished by our skilled metalwork team.
The finishing options for stainless steel substantially affect the character of the finished work:
Mirror Polish: The highest-gloss finish that makes the steel fully reflective — the sculpture becomes a mirror of its environment, constantly changing as the surroundings change. The most visually dynamic and spatially engaging finish.
Brushed/Satin Finish: A directional fine texture applied across the steel surface that reduces reflectivity while maintaining the material’s inherent metallic quality. More controlled and less dynamic than mirror polish, but extremely sophisticated in interior contexts.
Powder-Coated or Painted: For works where a specific colour is desired — the steel structure providing strength and permanence while the surface colour provides the visual character.
Our stainless steel works range from small indoor accent pieces to large outdoor public installations, with structural engineering calculations provided for any outdoor work subject to wind or seismic loading.
